    Morning. Sometimes the thought of another week of Trump/Cruz stupidity is too much to take. Only the words and images of our President and the thought of his SOTU make it worth getting up in the morning. I’ve been working on building up enthusiasm for Hillary because I know how hard we’ll need to work this year and how important her winning is to PBO. Zizi’s essay yesterday helped–if President Obama is for it, how can I be against it.

    internal “fun fact” about the “now maligned” Powerball:

    – person collecting the work pool is one of my closest friends so I knew that should a miracle happen, I would get the first call that the electronic images of the ticket were indeed still the same as the original she had in her hands and that we were taking it for safe keeping;

    – we kept joking about what we would do with all that money and decided we were in over our heads;

    – many workmates who have never played before chipped in their $2 that by time of draw the number of participants was 60 ….. so many dreams crushed;

    – yes, I will be chipping in my $2 once again …. so there goes part of my candy money for the week;

    we live in hope …. like someone we all know reminds us “there is nothing false about hope, ……, hope is the bedrock of this nation”

      Yikes, Df. If Trump signs start appearing, I’m going to need anti-nausea pills. Even pills won’t help if it’s Cruz.

      morning DF!

      what a sight to see …. have not yet seen those yard signs in my hood yet (may be because kaisch is still running and pretending that he matters);

      so you were the wiser about that Powerball …

        I only DREAM what I would be able to do with all that Powerball money:) I might throw in a couple dollars this week though, just for shits and giggles. Would be quite something to win all that on a $2 bet:) You know what really makes me laugh? I’ve seen stories about how much the govt would take of your winnings for taxes….AND PEOPLE COMPLAIN! They would have never even HAD that kind of money to begin with, yet they moan!! Stunning to me:)

        Kasich lives in fantasy land…he’s going no where. When is his time up in Ohio?

    Michelle Obama’s State of the Union guests this year are two people who President Barack Obama met while campaigning for the Oval Office in 2008.

    The first lady’s guests — Edith Childs of Greenwood, South Carolina, and Earl Smith of Austin, Texas — “personify President Obama’s time in office and most importantly, they represent who we are as Americans: inclusive and compassionate, innovative and courageous,” a White House official said in a release Saturday.

    Childs, a Greenwood County councilor, is known for her “Fired up! Ready to go!” chant that became an unofficial slogan of Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns.

    Smith, a veteran, met then-Democratic candidate Obama in February 2008 at a hotel in Austin, where he gave Obama a military patch he wore while serving in Vietnam. The patch struck a chord with Obama, who carried it in his pocket throughout his campaign (it will be archived in Obama’s presidential library upon its completion).

    Observation – Natural born citizen was placed in the constitution to prevent Alexander Hamilton from becoming President and at that time it meant you had to be born in what is actually US territory. Did the definition change, or did politicians change the meaning and citizens didn’t bother to question things as they approved the candidate, or more likely they weren’t paying attention. Of course it only became an issue when the candidate was not the ‘right’ colour. If the original intent (albeit racist) of the clause is to be followed, George Romney, John McCain and Ted Cruz would not be eligible to be President. Founding fathers suspected Alexander Hamilton of having “black blood”, hence the clause; some enterprising lawyer need to challenge ‘natural born’ vis-a-vis the original intent. Any thoughts or observations on this are welcome as perhaps some legal change etc was made that I am not aware of.

    • January 10, 2016 at 10:02 am

      I agree and would add that natural born is only mentioned once for presidential qualifications in Consitution , it isn’t mention as prequsites for any other federal office. In conclusion, our laws are based upon precedence, meaning a case before, if natural born goes unchalleded per say and Rafael Cruz or anyone is elected president who was not born in usa, after that it’s open for anyone to run.

      Re: the phrase “Natural born citizen”

      The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning. The consensus of early 21st-century constitutional and legal scholarship, together with relevant case law, is that “natural born” comprises all people born subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, including, generally, those born in the United States, those born to U.S. citizen parents in foreign countries, and those born in other situations meeting the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship “at birth”.[2]

      Who has the authority to define what is a Natural Born Citizen….it seems it is not up to the Supreme Court….but to Congress…very interesting

      In American Constitutional law, the political question doctrine is closely linked to the concept of justiciability, as it comes down to a question of whether or not the court system is an appropriate forum in which to hear the case. This is because the court system only has authority to hear and decide a legal question, not a political question. Legal questions are deemed to be justiciable, while political questions are nonjusticiable.

      A court can only decide issues based on law. The Constitution dictates the different legal responsibilities of each respective branch of government. If there is an issue where the court does not have the Constitution as a guide, there are no legal criteria to use. When there are no specific constitutional duties involved, the issue is to be decided through the democratic process. The court will not engage in political disputes.

        In old English church records “natural born” was used as the polite way of recording a birth to an unmarried mother. Just as well the US wasn’t using English Common law to define eligibility.

            I’m a little late to the party – but couldn’t resist that one 🙂 – We learned growing up that a President had to be born in the USA – interesting how it has changed. I find it annoying that the media is comparing PBO to Cruz, & Romney (Snr). The President WAS born in the USA – the others were not. I’m not sure about McCain – may have been born in US territory.
