President Obama was philosophic and amazingly upbeat on the OFA call this afternoon. He warned that he will be constrained from active direction of any OFA-type activities until he is a private citizen again but urged us to grieve together, absorb some hard lessons from over-confidence, and get back involved with our networks by Thanksgiving and plan some issue organizing with local allies on issues we feel passionate about. I was hoping for but heard no indication of marshalling a fight on behalf of Merrick Garland.

Excellent commentary here by Spandan- fine response to Bernie Sanders bull-sh*t on the “white working class”. I am really furious about him, I’ve ignored him and his disregard for democrats, knowing he just doesn’t speak for the majority of us and never for me.. but what a sob he is. Here’s Spandan: http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2016/11/14/on-the-future-of-the-democratic-party

Sanders is getting seriously on my nerves. He is REINFORCING the narrative that Trump created in the campaign. “Democrats don’t bother about the working class”. Which is UNTRUE !!!

I’m afraid President Obama won’t have too much time to relax when he gets out of office. Because he won’t have a choice: he will have to get involved again in guiding and leading OFA so Sanders doesn’t suck all the oxygen in the opposition to Trump’s policies.

He’s done nothing but talk in the 30 years he’s been in politics, so this is not surprising. All about himself.

First of all about Sanders, enough with the phrase “working class,” Bernie! You don’t own it and now is not the time to continue this odious separating of ourselves into classes and color wheels and trying to guess which gender “the other” is, and who should be respected first. As Americans, we need to have one foe – Trump (which includes his policies and henchmen).

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”

      GE eyecandi.

Someone here at TOD asked that question recently.

Everyone involved in the case is anonymous, and after the UVA-Rolling Stone verdict last week, media doesn’t want to get embroiled in a she-said-he-said type of reporting when they are unable to contact anyone except for the plaintiff’s attorneys.

Because the media outlets, that are owned by a few corporations and individuals do not care. Nothing and no one stands in the way of keeping the status quo. DT is their choice because even though they despise him, he can be depended upon not to change anything that would challenge their positions, power, and wealth. As for the victim, she saw the writing on the wall and decided to save herself from more fruitless attempts for justice.

    November 14, 2016 at 7:13 pm

I have actually being doing rather well from the day I realized that DT is not going to like being POTUS. He will be a prisoner, sentenced to long days of meetings and paperwork, days where every minute is scheduled, very little privacy, no room to make secret deals, having to speak to and engage people that he does not want to be around, harried from all sides, being actively and vocally hated by millions here and scorned abroad. His spawn was correct when he said that the presidency will be a step down for DT. He cannot just give a command and have it be so. No long runs to his properties, no real vacations, just work, work and more work. The presidency is not for lazy, ignorant, wishy-washy, barely educated, pouty, adults- in- age- only. Most previous presidents could deal with the demands because of past experiences and because some of them, most notably PBO, sought the office to do something rather than to be something. Dt will soon be sorry that he has the position, if he has not begun to feel so now. He will be surrounded by sycophants and opportunists, the “best people” with the best minds and skills will stay away. I see top talent and award winners refusing to come to the White House. Many of those who put this walking disease into the most important position in the world, will find that they will be ignored and will not get what they expect. The only thing that I am concerned with right now is keeping myself and my alive and my property undamaged as the KKK and its supporters (everyone who voted for DT and 3rd party candidates) wage war against POC. Good luck, America. You will need it.

    • November 15, 2016 at 2:12 am

Not a lot of top talent want to work for him it’s understandable. However, this will lead to one of the most incompetent, ignorant and corrupted administration we’ve ever seen. And America will suffer a great deal for it. Heck, Trump will make us appreciate George W. Bush. Mark my words…

He has to clean out more shit/fallout from this election. He and his team are doing all that they can to secure the firewall that will protect as many people as possible from the incoming vile, incompetent, asshole administration. GE CEB.

I mentioned on the previous thread that PBO came into office during the global financial meltdown, the eyes of the world were turned to him to rescue the world from another Great Depression.

As he leaves office, after everything he has accomplished, the eyes of the world (literally, from Europe to Asia, hence his trip to Greece, Germany and Peru this week) are turned to him for reassurance that the huge mistake that the US just made won’t result in world-wide chaos.

As if complete obstruction by the GOP during his term weren’t indignity enough, now he’s got to pave the way to ensure that the most unqualified and most unhinged person to ever occupy the Oval Office (shudder) doesn’t destroy the mutual prosperity gained since WWII.

Good evening, TOD! Made it home in time for the conference call. Didn’t believe it was possible, however, I ❤ President Obama even more…

Am heartsick over Gwen Ifill. Was introduced to her by a mutual friend on March 18, 2008, after Senator Obama's speech on race. After a lively and extended conversation where we found we had several mutual interests and additional mutual friends, she gave me her card with her home and cell #'s added, and told me to call her the next time I was in DC. I didn't.

Our next encounter was at a talk and book signing, once again at the National Constitution Center. When she saw my Mom and I approach the table she greeted me like an old friend. She actually remembered my name. Once again, she said call her. I didn't.

Our third encounter was when Washington Week was taped at the University of PA. I had a center aisle seat in the middle of the auditorium. Pre-show, she was walking through the audience, greeting the attendees when see saw me, gave me a big hug, and said "Girl, you're never going to call, are you" I assured her I would; always meant to, however, I never did. Now it's too late.

I posted a tweet and some comments in the Early Bird Chat thread several hours ago. Thank you to each person who responded with your thoughtful questions/comments.

    The following are my responses.

1 What can he do as President?

For starters, representatives to the Electoral College need to be fully informed of absolutely everything that the Government knows regarding foreign intrusions into our voting systems; everything that it knows of Trumps dealings with the Russians, Chinese and any other ‘hostile’ power; everything that is known about any foreign investments in Trump enterprises that could be used to leverage decisions in their favor; everything it knows about how Comey, in complete disregard for what Attorney General recommended, intentionally interfered in the election in a baseless and partisan manner; and, he can remind the EC representatives that the person who won the election is not Trump – a fact that recent history has taught us should not go unaccounted.

Given the enormity of the crisis that a Trump Presidency will be, the Electoral College, for possibly the first time in US history, is the bulwark between preserving our Democracy and tyranny. That is not hyperbole. Just look at what we already have seen Trump DO, not just say. Just look at the fact that he has no idea how to manage the Executive Branch.

2 The United States of America nearly ended in 1860. Nothing since, not even the Germans & Japanese combined, have posed as grave a threat to the dissolution of the Union – until 8 November 2016. That is the hard, cold reality confronting the person sworn to protect and defend the United States of America as its President. Given how much I trust Barack Obama I have little doubt that he understands the severity of the crisis. I also think he knows that one way or another a battle looms. It is not a battle that America, as we have known it since the end of WW2, has any chance of surviving if Trump is inaugurated on 20 Jan 2017. It is a battle that will rapidly escalate to global chaos the likes of which have never been witnessed.

3 Combine 1 & 2 – President Obama could call upon the Electoral College to examine every bit of data regarding the scale of threat posed by a Trump Presidency. Fighting that fight now is, in reality, no different from what President Lincoln had to do to protect the Union. I’m ready for that fight because we’d have a chance of emerging as the shinning example of hope and justice we all aspire America to be. After 20 Jan 2017, the debacle that will almost certainly ensue renders it improbable that America will be anything other than a failed attempt at civilization …. and there may not be anyone around to record that fact.

If I didn’t consider the situation the absolute gravest event this Nation has faced in my 69 years – way worse than the Cuban missile crisis, the Berlin Wall and all its implications, Nixon’s White House, 9/11 and the Bush/Cheney debacle – I would not be pushing for facing the inevitable now, rather than risking the chaos that will consume the planet if Trump is inaugurated. I predict we will not survive that chaos with anything remotely resembling a civilization.

    • November 15, 2016 at 12:28 am

      Thank you Alice and Betsy.

Obviously, I have no idea what may be being done to avert the disaster. What I am certain is that if any person on the planet knows just how grave the situation is, it’s President Obama.

I’ve written to him – with no expectation he will ever see the letter. But, maybe the person who reads it will realize that they are living at a moment like no other in American history.

#FORWARD Together and Good night TOD …..

      November 15, 2016 at 12:39 am

Bob. I agree with you on the scope of the crisis, but do not believe PBO will do this. Why? Because he has no chance of succeeding and he knows it. The electors are all party elders and the most faithful of the party. These idiots will not even stand up against putting a white nationalist next to the Oval Office, or speak out against having his children run his business, select his administration and apparently advise him on national security. If they will not even do that, there is zero chance that whey will seek to overturn the election. Perhaps in a less polarized time, but these are the same people who have hated on PBO for the last eight years. There is not a chance in hell they would even look at or listen to any evidence he were to provide.

PBO knows this, which is why he is being so gracious and trying to build a relationship with the Fool. I suspect he is hoping that before he blows up the world he just might give him a call. That is not meant to be funny, I am deadly serious. While I am angry beyond belief, at this point if he rips off the US for a few billion dollars and goes his merry way without doing too much damage internationally I’ll be thanking our lucky stars.

      • November 15, 2016 at 1:14 am

Appreciate your insightful comments, Foxfire, as always.

        However, I have to disagree.

To date, the only President who faced a comparable challenge to the National Security of the United States was Abraham Lincoln.

President Obama must use every tool he can possibly muster to stop Trump from being President. He can bring the enormity of the threat to the members of the Electoral College, and make it absolutely clear to every American and every other person on the planet just what the severity of the threat is.

President Lincoln and the Union could have lost the war. The same may be true for President Obama. But, make no mistake, if President Obama doesn’t stop Trump, it will be a disaster the likes of which may never be recorded.

        • 65 FoxfireTX
          November 15, 2016 at 1:45 am

I agree with you Bob on the scope of the disaster. I just don’t think that he will do it if there is no chance of success. I was watching carefully today when a reporter asked him if he would test his constitutional CiC powers to try to force Gitmo’s closing before he leaves office. He ignored that part of the question. I didn’t think it was possible but I am more afraid today than yesterday. This idea of giving is kids security clearances blows my mind. At the moment, he is surrounding himself with NO experience in any governmental policy area, and will be unable to see the long term consequences of any advice they give him. Hell, they won’t even know what questions to ask! Combine that with Rachel’s report that they are not returning to calls to State, the Pentagon and CIA, and I shuddered. They are so far over their heads they are afraid to even make the contacts? Apparently so. Oh, but he’s got the time to talk to Alex what;s his name and his good friend Vlad. Are we getting the feeling yet this is going to be far worse than anything we can even imagine at this point?

KTLA news report failed to state the fact that someone had complained that the veteran was not really a veteran which caused Chili’s manager to take the veteran’s meal away from him. I hope the veteran sues Chili’s! 😡 He even produced his discharge papers. Do I need to tell you that the veteran is African American?

    • November 14, 2016 at 9:57 pm

How depraved do you have to be to walk over to a veteran and take a meal away? Just so entirely SICK.

      • November 14, 2016 at 11:01 pm

Meta, it happens. Several years ago, I went to Applebee’s on Veterans Day. Neither I nor any of the dozen or so male vets around me were asked for ID. A homeless female vet came in and was queried up and down. She had her VA med ID and was grudgingly seated. The waitress was rude. She ordered her meal and a beverage. She ate half her meal and asked for a to go box. The waitress returned with her to go box and the check. She didn’t know that beverages were not included. She told the waitress she had no money. The waitress started upbraiding her. I called the waitress over, told her to add the beverage to my check. She was peaches and cream with me, refused my offer, said they would write it off, and made a comment about “those people…” Needless to say, I spoke with the manager. He ran outside, tracked the vet down, brought her back to the restaurant and gave her a couple of gift cards. I’ve never seen that waitress there again.

The reason the restaurants don’t include beverages is so that they can present a bill, showing what WOULD have been the total. That way, they hope the Vet will tip on the full value.

        • November 15, 2016 at 12:36 am

Oh wow, what a shame. So glad you stepped in and the manager did the right thing. But how absolutely horrible to treat the woman that way. It’s tragic.

          • November 15, 2016 at 1:31 am

It royally pissed me off. Personally, I’d prefer that all of those establishments do service/outreach projects to homeless vets rather than the freebies.

Had I not already been out running errands, I’d not have stopped. However, I know Vets that make it their mission to start first thing in the morning and hit every restaurant that doing the freebies. GLUTTONY & situational ethics! They’re all for the freebie for themselves, however, have a problem when others take advantage of freebies offered …

I intend to not watch any of the Inauguration activities after the Obamas are shown leaving the WH. I have not been able to shake this downhearted feeling. I compare it to grief. If not like when my husband died at least like when JFK was assasinated. I thought I had made it through the sad faze and onto the mad faze, but this morning after having a friend call me crying about one of her only relatives left dying I notice I am back in the dumps. This death of our Country is in my being. Those that say wait and see to me are part of the problem. What Donald said during the campaign is not acceptable no matter if he backtracks. Whom he surrounds himself with matters. His word choice matters. His actions matter. The fact that he is completely ignorant about the job, and how government works matters. The fact that he has personality flaws, disorders, and every hateful stand possible expresses it or changes his stance matters. No! He should not be in the office of the President of the USA.

The Press Conference was the absolute fabulous! I know you all must have caught the “give him space, yadda, yadda”. Give him “rope”! Watched it live & almost fell out of my chair laughing at that rope. I caught the news break by total accident since I’ve shut off all new shits. They interrupted some regular programming, & POTUS was on! He started off by telling those WHPC that here’s their chance to ask domestic questions, and those travelling with him overseas should then ask foreign policy questions thereafter! He lifted my spirits up during that press conference. Oh, and that bit he said about Dems doing better grassroots, you know where he’s going. Funniest, those WHPC were respectful this time, almost in mourning. Yep, your next dude speaks in word salad. Enjoy that bowl, wontcha!

Friends, Earlier tonight I actually felt like I was doing something proactive. I am a network member for our Knoxville Network Ministry. Tonight we had a big meeting (around 150-170 folks) join together to vote on the two issues we will focus on as a community in the coming year. There’s almost 30 church involved, every denomination and size. The focus is as it seems–justice. Micah 6:8. That’s our mantra. The issues had been narrowed to 5–mental health, housing/homelessness, education, jobs/economic development and payday lending. Tonight we narrowed to the final two: education and housing/homelessness. I rode downtown with a YOUNG 🙂 mother from our church. Good liberal. Was so good to be out, feel like I’m doing ‘something’ and to have her to talk with down and back. Good evening.

Also, today I called my three reps to express my feelings on Bannon being in the WH. Also called Schumer. Tomorrow afternoon, I hope I can get a few more Dem senators done. Will also hit Ryan and McConnell regarding Bannon.

Turning in soon and sure hope I can get a decent night’s sleep. Same wished for all of you.

DIGNITY: bearing, conduct, or speech indicative of self-respect or appreciation of the formality or gravity of an occasion or situation.

Could someone please get this to the Trump family and explain to them the Office of the President of the United States is one that demands dignity. These people are beyond the pale at so many levels. They are out there hawking Ivanka’s clothes and jewelry that she wore for the 60 Minutes interview using her father’s new title.

I understand that compared to the millions of other problems we face this is minor but my god, we are going to be the laughingstock of the world.

Did anyone catch TRMS tonight? What they are hearing behind the scenes, she seems to think there is going to be a major fail in the transition process. Apparently, the transition team has been contacted by the CIA, the Pentagon, State to name the top 3 and received no return calls or contacts from the Trump team. I am so ANGRY tonight.

BUT, BUT they do have the time to get out an email hawking the brand lines.

Foxfire – this is why I think there will be no tutoring of Trump from PBO – Trump does not want to learn. He wants to outsource the job to his children and go live in NY. Has anyone in the current transition team – or anyone currently given a position by Trump had ANY experience in a Federal government administration?

The choice seems to be to laugh hysterically of break down and cry – all the time.

On a happier note, I know there are other Josh Groban fans here. If you’re a fan, you know he was wanted to act for years, he started in HS in musical theater. Well, the show he has been cast in moved to Broadway tonight and got a stunning review from the NYT, and Josh in particular received rave reviews. So happy for him. So many performers are unwilling to move out of their comfort zones but he has always been game for stretching himself. The reviewer actually preferred it to Hamilton! With that happy thought, bidding everyone good night.

    I have lived under dictators and civil wars;

I, friends, and family have been at the receiving end of violence, abuse, imprisonment and yes even death due to the actions of a dictators.

I know a dictator’s words and actions when I see one and I can envision the path of what could follow if people are not vigilant and persistent.

Choosing to stay here after my education was because I admire the democratic promise of this country, the documents that serve as the point of reference and the institutions that support the search for a more perfect union.

before and after I got my citizenship, I have always given my time & resources to grassroots activities to support the democracy of this country.

I left the emergency room to go and vote early for SoS HRC & every Democrat on the ticket.

this election has been a major trauma for me and close friends & family here and abroad.

one thing I am sure of is that there is no way I am going to stay on the sidelines as we struggle together to protect this democracy from some of its reckless and hate-filled citizens.

it will not be easy but I am prepared to do my part.

    forward, together.

Good morning arapaho and others, That is scary stuff right there. Levels of fear added on to what we normally would have because we know nothing will be done to help/move things forward. Instead, be more damage and moving backward. That leads me to…….

Bob, I agree with everything you’ve said about how bad it will be and that this may be the death of our democracy as we know it. I lean more toward what Foxfire said. Sure, BO knows all this too. He undoubtedly knows a lot more than we do. As much as he admires Lincoln and emulates him, I am not sure he will willing to go as far as you suggest–in this particular political climate. Do I WISH he would, you bet. Realistically, to I believe he will, no.

There is NO ONE in this nation that knows more about the real and pervasive threat Trump poses to all of us than POTUS. That doesn’t mean he’s going to violate his understanding of the oath of office, the Constitution or the peaceful and orderly transition that he says he will carry out FOR THE SAKE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. He is conveying that America will persevere in the face of all odds. He will not cause a riot in this country; that will NOT be his legacy. It’s not who he is. If you listened to his phone call to the people, he will continue to work hard with us to do the right thing for democracy as a citizen, just like the rest of us. Expecting him to refuse to step down is unrealistic and not in character with who he is. That may disappoint some people but that is the reality.

          You’ve explained it perfectly, meta.

          • November 15, 2016 at 8:57 am

Thank you, sherijr. I understand how and why people wish this to be different, but the sooner we accept reality, the better equipped we are to fight back with strength and power. It’s going to be horrible and difficult and most of us are going to be horrifically crushed over the next 4 years. But denying Trump is going to be the next occupant of the WH isn’t going to help. Our job is go deep into our communities and ask people to get back to our most cherished American values.

I’m sick to my stomach every single day. I wish we could all wake up and go back to the days and months before the election and do more. But there were and are so many forces working against Democrats. It’s very depressing.

    • November 15, 2016 at 8:50 am

I am amazed how anyone can even think that Melania Trump is classy, dignified and beautiful. Maybe to them she is but not me. For eight years this have been the right wing hate for the Obama family. But who have carried on with grace and dignity. Our President and First Lady.

    Good idea…

I recently saw some discussion about keeping a log of violent events since Trump’s election. I have a similar idea, but I am neither tech savvy enough, or internet savvy enough, to pull it off. My idea is for some folks to collect stories about people who end up dying due to loss of health insurance when (assuming it happens) the ACA is repealed. The stories could be collected and put into a kind of narrative history of the consequences of repeal of this act. This narrative history could help put a face on the people who suffer as a consequence of this action. I believe it was Stalin who said something to the effect, a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic. Someone needs to put a face on what is possibly coming with repeal of the ACA. Maybe you could suggest such a project in one of your posts.

    Good morning, good people.
Still woke up after nightmares with a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I keep thinking this is not real. But it is. Horrifically real.
Maybe today will be better in some small but significant way.
    I have to believe that.

This is a fairly good summary of the President’s conference call to supporters, ICYMI:
