An article earlier today said Republicans were underestimating the numbers of women in their party using abortion services.

The research I have seen would support this. Banning abortions does not lower their incidence, it only increases the harm to mothers as they seek more dangerous ways to accomplish it. What does lower abortion rates is to take care of the needs of mothers, infants, and families with good affordable health care, living wages, and supports for families in the community throughout the years of raising children.

I think we should be pointing out that during President Barack Obama’s administration abortion rates came down to an historic low. It’s explained by the supports his administration was building particularly in the health care and coverage areas.

Pls see Chairman Nadler’s opening statement document the relationship history of Trump and McGahn at:
    https://nadler.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=393930
    –which includes–
“The Special Counsel also found the following:
“Substantial evidence indicates that by June 17, 2017, the President knew his conduct was under investigation by a federal prosecutor who could present any evidence of federal crimes to a grand jury.”
“Substantial evidence indicates that the President’s attempts to remove the Special Counsel were linked to the Special Counsel’s oversight of investigations that involved the President’s conduct—and most immediately, to reports that the President was being investigated for potential obstruction of justice.”
“Substantial evidence indicates that in repeatedly urging McGahn to dispute that he was ordered to have the Special Counsel terminated, the President acted for the purpose of influencing McGahn’s account in order to deflect or prevent further scrutiny of the President’s conduct towards the investigation.”
“Substantial evidence indicates that the President’s effort to have Sessions limit the scope of the Special Counsel’s investigation to future election interference was intended to prevent further investigative scrutiny of the President’s and his campaign’s conduct.”

    • May 21, 2019 at 12:33 pm

Chairman Nadler concluded his statement with:
“But for the DOJ’s policy of refusing to indict any sitting president,
I believe that each of these incidents, documented in detail in the Mueller report, constitutes a crime. But for the Department of Justice’s policy of refusing to indict a sitting President, I believe he would have been charged with these crimes. I am not alone in this belief. Over 900 former federal prosecutors, from across the political spectrum—whose job was to determine when the elements of a crime have been satisfied—have agreed that the President committed crimes and would have been charged if he were not the President.
And I believe that the President’s conduct since the report was released, with respect to Mr. McGahn’s testimony and other information we have sought, has carried this pattern of obstruction and cover up well beyond the four corners of the Mueller report. The President has declared out loud his intention to cover up this misconduct. He told Mr. McGahn to commit crimes on his behalf. He told Mr. McGahn to lie about it. After the report came out, the President claimed that Mr. McGahn lied to the Special Counsel about what happened. Then he directed Mr. McGahn not to come here today, so that the public would not hear his testimony and so that we could not question him.
President Trump may think he can hide behind his lawyers as he launches a series of baseless legal arguments designed to obstruct our work. He cannot think these legal arguments will prevail in court. He he can think he can slow us down and run out the clock on the American people.”
Let me be clear: this Committee will hear Mr. McGahn’s testimony, even if we have to go to court to secure it.
We will not allow the President to prevent the American people from hearing from this witness.
We will not allow the President to block congressional subpoenas, putting himself and his allies above the law.
We will not allow the President to stop this investigation, and nothing in these unjustified and unjustifiable legal attacks will stop us from pressing forward with our work on behalf of the American people.
We will hold this President accountable, one way or the other.”

“If Mueller is the patriot that his long record of distinguished public service suggests, then for god’s sake, step up to the plate now and play it down the line. America needs an arbiter of fairness now more than ever, and the country is knocking on your door one more time. Open it.”

    Sound familiar?
“Ullrich shows how carefully Hitler prepared his speeches.
-Seemingly spontaneous, they were in fact calculated. Full of base allegations and vile stereotypes, they were precisely designed to gain maximum attention from the media and maximum reaction from the crowds he addressed. When he declared that fines were of no use against those he called Jewish criminals, his listeners interrupted him with chants of “Beatings! Hangings!”
-Aided by his talented propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels, Hitler not only flaunted his vulgarity and exploited tribal hatreds; he also lied and lied his way to success. The Jews, he argued, had stabbed the German Army in the back in 1918; the politicians of the other parties, he insisted, were hopelessly venal and corrupt and should be put in jail; the Nazi thugs who were condemned to death in 1932 for the “Potempa murders” were victims of a “monstrous blood-verdict”; liberal newspapers that criticized Hitler were, as Goebbels put it, the “Jewish lying press.”
-Few took Hitler seriously or thought that he would actually put his threats against the country’s tiny Jewish minority, his rants against feminists, left-wing politicians, homosexuals, pacifists, and liberal newspaper editors, into effect. Fewer still believed his vow to quit the League of Nations, the forerunner of the United Nations. But within a few months of taking office, he did all of these things—and much more. Once in power, the Nazi regime was run exclusively by men.”

May be my thinking is simplistic but here goes:

The fact that the republican-controlled senate will not vote to impeach that homegrown demagogue scumbag should be welcomed by Democrats and not feared.

Why: because it would put every elected member of congress and senate on record about that scumbag.

therefore, it would give Democrats another chance to demonstrate to us voters that the republicans have been consistent in their complicity in the deep corruption going on.

As such the Democratic party as a whole would get a chance to campaign for a need to clean out all the complicity republicans.

    maybe I am naive

Nope. I agree 100%. What I have always thought, just never expressed it. To me, it’s common sense. Sadly, too often the Dems are 1. Scared of their own shadows and 2. Totally suck at messaging. It astounds me how they never learn to FIGHT, not like the Rs, but clean and right FIGHT. And, how year after year and year, the Rs run away with messaging on EVERY issue. Makes me crazy.

    Absolutely BEAUTIFUL statement from Pete.

Six years ago today: working on a speech with deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes. For context, the draft at far left was likely the latest version that he had brought home the night before. The yellow legal pad shows some of his hand-written additions that he worked on overnight along with the edits, at right, that he had made to the latest version.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ To him, the words that the President of the United States spoke were important. For the moment and for history.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ He delivered this speech two days later at the National Defense University at Fort McNair. These are the words he ended with:⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ “Our victory against terrorism won’t be measured in a surrender ceremony on a battleship, or a statue being pulled to the ground. Victory will be measured in parents taking their kids to school; immigrants coming to our shores; fans taking in a ballgame; a veteran starting a business; a bustling city street.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ The quiet determination; that strength of character and bond of fellowship; that refutation of fear – that is both our sword and our shield. And long after the current messengers of hate have faded from the world’s memory, alongside the brutal despots, deranged madmen, and ruthless demagogues who litter history – the flag of the United States will still wave from small-town cemeteries, to national monuments, to distant outposts abroad. And that flag will still stand for freedom.⁣” ⁣

That initial production should be completed by the end of next week.
As a result of the Department’s acceptance, the business meeting has been postponed. The Committee’s subpoena will remain in effect, and will be enforced should the Department fail to comply with the full document request.

      Consider the trumpetry:
“”In June 2015, Trump promised that if elected president, he would rebuild the country’s infrastructure. “Nobody can do that like me,” he said, “Believe me. It will be done on time, on budget, way below cost, way below what anyone ever thought.””
      https://thinkprogress.org/trump-america-infrastructure-congress-stops-doing-oversight-39f29d965596/
Today Pelosi: “Last night he put forth a letter saying that unless we passed the U.S./Mexico/Canada free trade agreement, there was no reason for us to, you know, we couldn’t go forward with infrastructure.”
Today Schumer: “When we got in the room, the curtains were closed, the president – there was a place for him at the front, so he could stand and attempt to tell us why he wouldn’t do infrastructure. And of course, then he went to the Rose Garden with prepared signs that had been printed up long before our meeting.”
