First Lady Michelle Obama speaks at a luncheon in the East Room of the White House to honor of the winners of the 2014 National Design Awards
Sorry everyone, didn’t have time to catch up with newsie stuff over the weekend, but caught a glimpse of the Selma commemorations today.
Got me thinking of the late Ann Nixon Cooper and President Obama talking about her in his first Chicago victory speech.
“The heartache and the hope, the struggle and the progress…..”
Sequestration and all that? A misery. Completely.
But when you think of what Ann’s generation went through…. unimaginable, really.
So, in honor of Ann and her generation: never give up, never give in.
Ever.

Update:

Good, a correction. But seriously, why was the ‘mistake’ made in the first place? Did they actually listen to the speech?

So, Republicans love executions (even of the innocent), they cheer the death of people without health insurance, they despise gay soldiers, and now they reckon the unemployed should blame themselves ….. wow.

Media Matters: Proving once again that there’s no standard by which many mainstream media outlets are willing to hold sloppy propagandist Andrew Breitbart, CNN this afternoon invited the discredited blogger on the air to discuss the Rep. Anthony Weiner (NY- D) Twitter story.
Conveniently setting aside the fact that virtually every attack campaign that Breitbart has launched in recent years has collapsed under the weight of modest scrutiny, CNN presented the fatuous blogger as some sort of expert who could walk people through the Weiner story, which he’s been hyping for days. (The whole right-wing blogosphere launched itself into a creepy tizzy over the holiday weekend regarding the story.)
The invite was odd because last summer CNN’s Anderson Cooper helped debunk Breitbart’s shoddy Shirley Sherrod attack and announced the clips of Sherrod that Breitbart posted online “were clearly edited to deceive and slander Miss Sherrod.” Cooper added that Breitbart’s behavior was “a classic example of what is wrong with our national discourse.”

Ezra Klein makes a good point on this: “It’s great that CNN has conclusively debunked the birther nonsense yet again, but really, what’s the point of fact-checking someone (Donald Trump) who has adopted a deliberate strategy of trafficking in lies in order to attract media attention, with no concern about whether it’s positive or negative?”
Still, credit to Anderson Cooper for showing these people up for what they are yet again: racist excrement.

Alex Pareene (Salon): CNN has finally found something it can take a stand against ….the man who drove CNN over the edge into something resembling activist journalism is, of course, Donald Trump.
…Anderson Cooper devoted the entirety of “Anderson Cooper 360°” last night to Trump, disguised as a special on “definitively debunking” birtherism, a conspiracy theory that has been definitively debunked a thousand times since 2008.
…Breaking: Hawaiian officials who have seen relevant documents confirm that the president was born in Hawaii! This has been known for years. The real meat of the special is a testy interview with, yes, Donald Trump, the television star…..
….But I am still proud of CNN, for finally finding some backbone and having the bravery to state that Donald Trump is a buffoon, without also noting, for balance, that some people think Donald Trump is not a buffoon. Baby steps.

Helene Cooper (New York Times): President Obama is not known for showing a surplus of emotion in public, but toward the end of his speech at the University of Arizona, he paused for 51 seconds and appeared to gather himself.
….9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green’s death was an emotional punch to the gut for so many people across the country. Among them … is the president himself, whose younger daughter, Sasha, was born three months before Christina.
“I want our democracy to be as good as Christina imagined it,” Mr. Obama had just said. “All of us - we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.”
And then he stopped. After 10 seconds, he looked to his right. After 20 seconds, he took a deep breath. After 30 seconds, he started blinking. Then his jaw tightened. Finally, after 51 seconds of silence, he began to speak again, describing a book published after Sept. 11, 2001 - the day Christina was born - that included her picture and simple wishes for a child’s life, including one inscription that read “I hope you jump in rain puddles.”
It was a stark moment for Mr. Obama, both as a president and as a father … he made no explicit mention of either Sasha or her older sister, Malia. But they have been on his mind as he has grappled with how to respond to the shootings…. the president, friends said, was initially hesitant about calling Christina’s parents after the shootings, saying that if it had happened to his daughters, he would not be capable of talking to anyone. He eventually did call the Greens … and then met with them before his speech.
..on Wednesday night, Mr. Obama’s perspective as a parent came through, propelling him to what is likely to be remembered as the one of the most soaring moments of his presidency.

Warning! This video features a birther bigot!
I wouldn’t usually infest this site with birther bigot videos, but Anderson Cooper’s demolition of this creature (his ammunition of choice: pesky facts), was so sublime I thought I’d bring it to you:

Not that the facts worry the bigot, he will carry on with his efforts to warn the American people that the President is black foreign-born!
