Morning all. Chips, I hope Danny had a fabulous birthday yesterday. It’s going to be an interesting week with the President back in town and everyone either clamoring for his attention or to waiting to hurl brickbats his way. I hope he soaked up a lot of sunshine for the rough times ahead.

While I have your attention (btw, are you truly awake?) – I’m heading out early Thursday morning for a long road trip – 8hrs on the highway – so will likely be incommunicado to the village. Do try to keep a lid on the action here, and around the President. Thanks! Will check in upon arrival.

TY, CC. It will be fabulous-er once it’s over 😉 – not exactly looking forward to the driving aspect as I’ll be the only driver in the vehicle. (It’s the trip to drop offspring at his out-of-town uni-vee for the start of his Masters studies.)

Good luck on the driving and hope your offspring has a good year. Remember the advice we all got from the poster who drove his truck long distances? He said he kept awake by munching on slightly ‘hot’ crackers/chips and water. Said never to eat too much at a stop or you’ll fall asleep. He also had interesting stuff to listen to. I survived my years of commuting in DC area traffic by listening to books on tape. Have a great trip!!!!

Plus, this time I’ll also have TOD rooting for me with positive vibes along the route. I’m not leaving til Thursday, so I’ll remind you guys Wednesday night to put on your virtual travel goggles so that you can come along with me. 🙂

I missed the notification of a new post. So I’m VC-ing away ;-), posting and refreshing, not realizing that everyone had moved on.

‘I’m VC-ing away’ – So that’s where you were! 🙂 I absolutely miss the alert too – stressful, if you ask me. Wish I could sit WordP down and have a talk with them. First thing would be about the active eye roll smilie that they threw into the garbage, then all my other grievances about other things they’ve messed up.

      Morning, SW!

        Morning VC!!! 🙂

Now, although I’m getting the orange notification that I have a reply to my comment, I don’t get a drop-down when I click on it. I have to go to my account page — or refresh (but where’s the fun in that).

Good luck with this chore, VC.

Hope you’ve got a reliable (i.e., one who doesn’t view his clients as walking ATM machines) mechanic.

I was pleasantly surprised a couple of months ago — after going to an Auto Club recommended shop for a new battery (on the last day of its 3-year warranty, lucky me!) I asked about getting my timing belt/chain replaced on my 10-year-old car. Got a quote that was $200 more than the Nissan dealer, then went to a place that mailed me one of those throw-away coupons for something else and got a quote that was more than half as much as the original place.

One of the customers there raved about the place, said she’d been taking her car there for years, so that’s where I ended up getting this major work done. They were great, even replaced a burned-out brake light which I didn’t ask to check and didn’t charge me.

Here’s to honest and reliable mechanics!

        Morning, Arapaho!

I’m back on line, and apparently this little bit of assessment will **only** cost me $800 +tax. {The called back after checking the car.} Something about wheel bearing part in its dying stages, leaking shocks, etc. etc. Bottom line for me though is that I will feel more relaxed that I’ve checked things out BEFORE setting out. These guys are more expensive than the mechanic my sisters use, but they are so close to my home that I’m willing to stick with them. When I drop my vehicle I can easily walk back home, and there have been occasions when they have checked minor stuff for me without charge, so I figure it’s a little bit of give and take.

          August 25, 2014 at 12:18 pm

The most important thing is for them to be reliable.

I was without my car for a couple of weeks in June, and got very familiar with the bus service here — I’ve lived here more than 30 years, but had only taken the bus a couple of times before. The city bus service pretty much sucks, but the community has invested in a transportation center that conveniently connects to other bus services. The county bus service is too good to be believed. Their buses have plush, comfortable seats, is air conditioned with Wi-Fi — and it costs all of $1.25 — you can get a transfer ticket on a city bus (which costs $1.50) to the county bus — I had to go to Ventura (50 miles round trip) a couple of times on the county bus which cost me a whopping $3, without the stress of traffic.

More on my car repair experience (to keep you company while you wait for your car, because we’re having a “private” conversation on an “obsolete” thread, LOL)…

The Auto Club shop quoted me $1,400 — the Nissan dealer quoted $1,200, and I got the work done for less than $700. Extremely nice, thorough, efficient shop and they offer courtesy rides to and from the shop while your car is there. I’m a customer for life now — the most surprising thing to me is that I found out about them from one of those “throw-away” flyer/coupons that clutter my mailbox almost every day.

          • 39 vcprezofan2
            August 25, 2014 at 1:04 pm

Were they a small operation (as in not a franchise)? Sounds almost like the kind of deal my sisters have, except for the courtesy rides.

You know something, I cannot tell the last time I’ve ridden the bus! For all I know they *do* have wi-fi etc.

In truth I could get a bus/train to where I’m going but getting to and from the station at both ends of the trip would be a big inconvenience.

I’ll be paying a closer eye on those ‘throw-away’ coupons from now on. 😉 😉

Yes a “Pa” owned business, called “Rick’s Japanese,” meaning he specializes in Japanese cars.

Since I’m Japanese-American, I figured they would harbor no prejudice against Asians, LOL. Not complaining, I’ve only experienced outright prejudice a few times.

His service manager was a ball of energy, remembers customers and cars by name, service completed on a big job by 3 pm, an absolute delight. First time in my life I’ve ever said that about taking my car in for service.

They’re not lacking for business, have no idea why they offer direct mail coupons.

India’s Supreme Court has ruled that all coal mining licences awarded between 1993 and 2010 are illegal.

Successive governments gave rights to mine coal to state and private companies in a manner which was “not fair and transparent” and without competitive bidding, the court said.

The court will now examine whether 218 such licences should be cancelled.

India’s federal auditors say the country lost $210bn (£134bn) because coalfield rights were sold off cheaply.

“All coal block allocations since 1993 till 2010 before pre-auction era have been done in an illegal manner,” the Supreme Court was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

So it appears that on the day of his funeral, NYT puts out a hit piece on Mike Brown. Stay classy NY Times…stay classy.

    • 65 jackiegrumbacher
      August 25, 2014 at 9:02 am

Hf, I would like to know what the NYT thinks any of this has to do with a young man getting shot six times on the street!!!! Is it up to any random policeman to do an instant analysis of any pedestrian’s life and decide, on his own, that that person needs to die brutally and instantly. This is 1000 percent bullshit, hogwash and utter racist garbage. Nobody ever claimed that Michael or anyone else is an ANGEL. Just what that has to do with his shooting is only apparent to the sick minds of the people who wrote this article and the editors who accepted it. I thank God I ditched the NYT as a source of information years ago and never looked back.

      • 66 hopefruit2
        August 25, 2014 at 9:18 am

The NYT is trying to have it both ways. Putting info – under the guise of trying to portray Brown as a “normal” teen, knowing fully well that America, even “liberal America” does not give Black male teens the luxury of “normal teenhood” unless they are damn near perfect.

The NYT would NEVER, ever put out an article like this on Darren Wilson. Because they would not want a significant proportion of their readers coming away with a negative impression of that Cop – regardless of what the original intent of the article was.

        • 67 99ts
          August 25, 2014 at 9:32 am

They have to be perfect hf – not “damn near”. Any minor blemish is blown up into – bad teen. Black children/teens cannot be victims if the killer is white.

    • 68 Nerdy Wonka
      August 25, 2014 at 9:41 am

So basically, he did what 99% of teenagers did but he’s being crucified because he’s not white. When you’re white, it’s cool to dabble in drugs, alcohol, and pen rap because you’re just “finding your way.”

      The hypocrisy stinks.

Michael Brown was killed. That is the horror.

      • 69 hopefruit2
        August 25, 2014 at 9:52 am

Exactly – the NYT HAD to put it out there that: “He’s no angel.” Who the hell is an angel? Was that necessary? And which human being gets to the age of 18 and doesn’t have “both problems and promise?”

Lawsuit Accuses Ferguson Cop Of Hog-Tying, Choking A 12-Year-Old Boy

Ferguson, Mo. police officer allegedly hog-tied and choked a 12-year-old boy who was checking the mail at the end of his driveway, according to a lawsuit filed in 2012 in Missouri federal court.

The Huffington Post reported Sunday on the lawsuit, which accuses Justin Cosma, who was with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office at the time, and another officer of using “unreasonable and excessive” physical force against the boy. The accusations came in September 2012, just after Cosma joined the force in Ferguson.

The Huffington Post’s Ryan Reilly, a former reporter for TPM, identified Cosma as one of the officers who arrested him and another journalist from the Washington Post last week at a Ferguson McDonald’s amid heated protests.

Why all these incidents? Never a dull day ever.

  23. 77 arapaho415

Inexcusable for @nytimes to smear the personal life of a person executed in broad daylight by someone with a police badge with full complicity of the police department.

I haven’t read all the articles on #MichaelBrown, but this one describes one young reporter’s experience in #Ferguson from a white female perspective.

It describes the legacy of Jim Crow and segregation have burdened this country with, something that is apparently common in the South and Mason-Dixon-line border states.

    From the article:

“Police barricades constructed throughout the neighborhood where Brown was killed have essentially turned the area into a maze in which its residents are trapped. In order to get in or out, you have to drive your car up on to the sidewalk and or into someone’s yard.

‘You don’t want to go in there,’ a cop, who was white, told me when I asked for directions. He added that I could be shot.”

“Dressed in a light orange ‘I Love Ferguson’ T-shirt, Brian Fletcher, the former mayor of Ferguson, held a community meeting at a local church on Thursday evening to ask for suggestions on how to change the town — particularly how it handles the issue of race.

‘[Michael Brown] is going to be our legacy,’ Fletcher said. ‘It’s our job to turn it around.’

The church was full of Ferguson residents, but the problem was that there wasn’t a representation of the people who are most affected by these protests: the lower-income families on the other side of Ferguson. In this city, blacks outnumber whites nearly two-to-one. However, out of the nearly full sanctuary of attendees, less than 20 were black.”

It concludes by saying this event was “promoted” by flyers handed out at the local café, a place I believe the majority of residents of Ferguson are not welcome.
