NW, thank you for the recap of today’s news. So many news, so many things to learn. Why would I indulge in artificial scandals like HRC’s amplified e-mail scandal? Why would I join in cohort the GOP who is planning to dump an ultra conservative, union-buster, ACA killer on us as their presidential nominee? I want my time to be very useful and to help me make forward progress.

      Thank you again.

I worry that Hillary’s waiting to declare or not could impact our side’s race. If she waits too long then decides not to run it may be too late for other candidates that would run if she was not running.

Our President who taught Constitutional Law has to be the most patient man in the world to come short for not calling them “dumb fucks.”

ICYMI: ‘Barack and Me’ A sit-down with the president on Air Force One and a trip to Selma on the 50th anniversary of the historic marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge:

“…I’ve been chasing Barack Obama for more than a decade. I watched his 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention while deep in the throes of college application essays. It was a speech that I needed to hear, a speech that felt as if it were specifically for me. Before I knew it, I was working on Capitol Hill in 2007 as a college intern for Senator Ted Kennedy, where I would occasionally catch a glimpse of the then-Senator Obama traveling on the underground monorail from the Senate to the Capitol floor. I reveled in the excitement when he announced his presidency that February. I volunteered for that campaign in 2008 in New Hampshire, taking to the streets of New England with a megaphone following his victory, and hoping to one day be a part of his actual staff. In 2011, looking for a way out of graduate school, I applied for a job as a blogger in his reelection campaign — and I almost got that job, before then not getting that job….

….I’ve spent my entire life watching people who have had successful lives still get misty-eyed about blowing out that knee and never going pro; about coming up short and not qualifying for the Olympics; about not scoring high enough on that test to get into that school. People who have had more impactful lives because they came up short. People who will tell you that, ultimately, they’re happy they came up short. But people who will still openly admit it’s something they think about all the time. This was that. The shock of Saturday morning ran through my system for 24 hours. I expected it to finally give way to relief and to joy. But instead, this was anger. And I liked it, because I knew it meant I still cared. In that moment, I finally got the answer to the question I’d spent so many years wanting to ask the president. I wasn’t chasing Obama — he was a smoke screen. I was chasing political enchantment. Even if that wasn’t exactly what I’d gotten from Obama, he’d helped me get there. And as we descended into LaGuardia, that anger finally gave way to elation”

    OU’s best football player:

“NORMAN — Less than 12 hours after viewing the video — and three hours before he would walk arm-in-arm with teammates and coaches into the Everest Training Center in silent protest — Oklahoma senior linebacker and team captain Eric Striker sat in the OU library, calmly detailing his outrage and heartache over the racist chant that went viral Sunday night and embarrassed his school. Striker’s initial reaction to the video, showing members of the now-disbanded Sigma Alpha Epsilon OU chapter cheerfully singing that they’d never accept a black brother, went viral itself. He posted an 18-second, profanity-laced tirade to SnapChat, angrily accusing the same fraternity members who sang that racist song of shaking athletes’ hands and hugging them after big games….

…Striker reached out to a reporter from The Oklahoman and asked to meet so that he could more fully express his feelings — and the feelings of other OU student-athletes — about the racist video, the struggles young black men sometimes face on OU’s campus and his profound desire to be seen as more than a football player. “I hate to be defined as a football player,” Striker said. “I’ve got a great personality. I’m humorous. I’m a political science major. I love everybody. I’m a people person. “Football is not who I am. All you know is the number ‘19’ on the back of my jersey.” … The All-Big 12 linebacker — perhaps best known for tormenting Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron in the 2014 Sugar Bowl — said he and his teammates have kept quiet about the way they’ve been treated in the past at fraternity parties — and not just SAE events…No more. Despite often being invited to parties because of his athletic prowess — and used to promote and create buzz about those parties — Striker said he’s been singled out and asked who invited him, then told he can stay, “as long as you don’t cause any trouble.”continued

      It was.

I got some push back here yesterday when I congratulated Cody Keenan on the speech.

While it’s true the theme, the direction and the thrust of the speech was all President Obama, someone (i.e., Keenan the speechwriter) pulled so much history and future together to craft this speech.

Despite what the odious @EzraKlein said was the “take-away” from the speech, this is the part that spoke loudest to me. I’m sure others will have a different favorite passage.
“Look at our history. We are Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea, pioneers who braved the unfamiliar, followed by a stampede of farmers and miners, and entrepreneurs and hucksters. That’s our spirit. That’s who we are.

We are Sojourner Truth and Fannie Lou Hamer, women who could do as much as any man and then some. And we’re Susan B. Anthony, who shook the system until the law reflected that truth. That is our character.

We’re the immigrants who stowed away on ships to reach these shores, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free –- Holocaust survivors, Soviet defectors, the Lost Boys of Sudan. We’re the hopeful strivers who cross the Rio Grande because we want our kids to know a better life. That’s how we came to be. (Applause.)

We’re the slaves who built the White House and the economy of the South. (Applause.) We’re the ranch hands and cowboys who opened up the West, and countless laborers who laid rail, and raised skyscrapers, and organized for workers’ rights.

We’re the fresh-faced GIs who fought to liberate a continent. And we’re the Tuskeegee Airmen, and the Navajo code-talkers, and the Japanese Americans who fought for this country even as their own liberty had been denied.

We’re the firefighters who rushed into those buildings on 9/11, the volunteers who signed up to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq. We’re the gay Americans whose blood ran in the streets of San Francisco and New York, just as blood ran down this bridge. (Applause.)

We are storytellers, writers, poets, artists who abhor unfairness, and despise hypocrisy, and give voice to the voiceless, and tell truths that need to be told.

We’re the inventors of gospel and jazz and blues, bluegrass and country, and hip-hop and rock and roll, and our very own sound with all the sweet sorrow and reckless joy of freedom.

We are Jackie Robinson, enduring scorn and spiked cleats and pitches coming straight to his head, and stealing home in the World Series anyway. (Applause.)

We are the people Langston Hughes wrote of who “build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how.” We are the people Emerson wrote of, “who for truth and honor’s sake stand fast and suffer long;” who are “never tired, so long as we can see far enough.”

That’s what America is. Not stock photos or airbrushed history, or feeble attempts to define some of us as more American than others. (Applause.) We respect the past, but we don’t pine for the past. We don’t fear the future; we grab for it. America is not some fragile thing. We are large, in the words of Whitman, containing multitudes. We are boisterous and diverse and full of energy, perpetually young in spirit. That’s why someone like John Lewis at the ripe old age of 25 could lead a mighty march.”

      * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

It is sincerely not my intent to take anything away from President Obama’s vision and execution of this awesome speech, one that has a secure place in America’s history. But I stand by my congratulations to Keenan for a job well done.

And I do include @BarackObama in the speechwriting hall of fame:

The forces behind the republicans want a new war. Pure and simple. They have wanted war with Iran for years now. In the last years of the Bush administration, Cheney and his gang pushed for war with Iran. But some more sane factions within the military and the intelligence community prevailed; they stopped the neocons.

The warmongers are back at it. And are much more blatant this time. Because they don’t control the White House and they are desperate. Like Bob said, we’re witnessing what could be considered as an attempted coup d’état.

The video from the OklahomaU frat was unbelievable.

Just like I don’t get most of the funny tweets that NW painstakingly curates, I couldn’t understand a word from the video. But this certainly clears things up:

My guess is that nearly every White American who has seen (and understood what was said) is ashamed to be White in America.

But you know, this can’t be an isolated incident. It’s probably been going on for years, but now we have Twitter to unmask these unbelievable bigots.

Nice to see Tom Cotton prove himself to be a fucking idiot. This parade of politically tone deaf and stupid stunts the GOP is engaging in is making the GOP look more and more treasonous (we already knew it, but the larger public may be catching on). The infantile need to take some action, no matter how self-defeating, to show that they have “power”, that they defy PBO, is making the GOP look like a bunch of racist nuts. They seem to be going through a collective mental breakdown, and seem not to give a fuck about the country they claim to love. These MFers are CRAZY. Racism combined with the impotence they feel in regards to PBO is literally driving them crazy. Living in the FoxNews bubble and secure in being pampered by the corrupt media, gives the GOP the confidence to engage in their mental breakdown for all to see. Would love to see polling questioning GOP’s “love of country” or “does GOP put party before country”. Not holding my breath though……

What news are we learning from that rhetorical poll? We all know that that Congress REFUSES to work with the Chief Executive. The 11% that think otherwise must be either blind, clueless, or completely oblivious. But of course, the tone in the article is to let people believe that somehow, the blame squares equally on the President as it does on Congress. Or, the article fails completely to state the obvious, that to be nonpartisan, the President should have kneeled down and caved to GOP obstruction in the name of bi-partisanship. I just don’t get these people.

    • 72 EricFive
      March 9, 2025 at 11:05 pm

They are propagandists. They feed the public “both sides are to blame” propaganda 24/7 and then take a poll that finds, surprise, surprise, that most people echo the “both sides are to blame” nonsense. In this poll 47% blame both sides equally for Washington dysfunction. As a side note, what is it with this number constantly appearing? Does anybody else notice how “47%” keeps popping up?

    • 75 bella2758

      • 76 bella2758

One more thing, I can not believe that the media is trying to convince us that the problem with Capital Hill lies with both parties. It is a lie and anyone with any darn sense knows that. It was not President Obama who said he would not compromise with the Republicans, it was the Republicans who said they would not compromise with this President.

Everyone here knows I loathe the MSM, but a report that I heard on CBS radio news this afternoon really ticked me off.

It was about the gobsmacking, warmongering, treasonous letter to Iran by GOP Senators. The report said “the White House and Democrats complained…” without even a hint of what a breach of protocol and treasonous act in hope that the GOP will enrich the coffers of the Military-Industrial Complex.

IIRC, during the GWB Administration, Dems also “complained,” but I don’t recall hearing that word used to describe any GOP in the last 15 years.

If we had a true investigative media, they would have their heels dug into which contractors pocketed how many BILLIONS during the Iraq War (starting with that weasel Lara Logan’s husband):

if we still had any semblance of journalism at the major networks or papers, i think republicans would be a small minority in congress. instead, we have jake tapper today supposedly “grilling” tom cottonmouth, even though cotton was spewing literal gibberish in every sentence he uttered, and tapper just let it all go without a word. tapper pressed slightly on some obscure points that are meaningless to the overall issue, but the complete crazy warmongering statements were made without a peep from tapper. that appears to be the #1 job of anyone at a major “news” outlet anymore.

tapper and friends become almost vitriolic toward any major democrat even when they are making complete sense and defending themselves well, if the democrat bucks the republican talking point du jour. tom cotton nonsensical gibberish = “nice to have you on senator.” nice and calmly at the end. mission accomplished for tapper.

From the linked wapo article - Zarif

“I should bring one important point to the attention of the authors and that is, the world is not the United States, and the conduct of inter-state relations is governed by international law, and not by US domestic law. The authors may not fully understand that in international law, governments represent the entirety of their respective states, are responsible for the conduct of foreign affairs, are required to fulfil the obligations they undertake with other states and may not invoke their internal law as justification for failure to perform their international obligations.”

So humiliating for these know-nothing Republicans… and the fools who vote for them. To be schooled on the international stage like this. They’ve really undermined the entire country.

And many who signed this have been in congress since forever. They KNOW the letter had no standing - they just wanted to support Bibi against PBO. They are still trying to make him a one term President :)

More “governing” as performance art by the GOP. That is why I don’t sweat these stunts the GOP keeps pulling, it diminishes them not PBO. Don’t get me wrong, I hate the blatant disrespect, but see this more as a tantrum by the GOP (and their patron Sheldon Adelson who seems to have purchased the GOP), and tantrums are thrown by folks who feel they are losing. The GOP is incapable of governing, so they engage in nonstop theater and stoop to new lows, further exposing their racism, hate and small mindedness for the world to see. This latest stunt may actually make Iran more likely to sign a deal.

finally, the pesky ireesh are all out for 259 . 59 runs too many. they should have been wrapped up under 200.

well, at least for the furst time, we bowled out the opposition 5 times in a row. newzies did the same in their group. And both top their groups with the cleanest sheets thus far. 8-) 8-) 8-)

260 under 40 overs is my bet. easypeasy. what say you, bt?

I am so grateful I can come here for like minded people as I need to commiserate with others. Most everyone I know in this rural area seem to be Tea Party enthusiasts. They take Fox News as truthful and accurate and me as an extremist. I was hearing my brother talking about liking Scott Walker. He does not believed in Unions, taxes, or Government spending so what I complain to him about Walker he likes. When talking about the Koch Brother influence he does the both sides argument. He is a big time Fox watcher.

Potential, unintended consequences of this GOP stunt:

“But foreign policy is won or lost on the margins more often than you might think. International agreements can succeed or fail with just a smidge more or less trust between the parties. A major US foreign policy challenge this century will be competing for regional influence with powers such as China or Russia. If you’re, say, the foreign minister of Myanmar, trying to decide whether to throw in with China or America, you are going to be a little bit less likely to hedge toward the US if you think their foreign policy-making apparatus is fundamentally broken.”

    http://www.vox.com/2015/3/9/8177815/republicans-foreign-policy-sabotage

Once again, a far bigger threat to our republic than AQ or Daesch. After 24 hours, I remain so angry I can’t quite believe it.

Looking forward to the ‘read out’ of their meeting ….

And, I realize not all Ayatollahs are bad people, just as all Republicans are not bad people. But, when seeking to crystallize hardline Iranian Fundamentalists becoming pals of 47 Senate Republicans, #Ayatollah47 is a useful meme, nothing more.

    Good night TOD ….
