Imagine what the United States Senate would be like if there were more Sen. Murphy’s and fewer right wing crazies. Think how much would get done and how much safer and saner this country would be.
I saw Natalie in concert and was blown away by her back up singers. They had powerful voices and Natalie let them soar! And she soared right along with them. So generous, so gracious…many stars are not. I gained even more respect for her talent after that.
May she Rest In Peace.
I was Blessed to see Natalie perform on several ocassions; the most memorable was the 2001 Newport Jazz Festival. The weekend was sort of ho-hum; too many of the performers were just “phoning it in;” I was feeling I could have stayed home, listened to cd’s and had a V-8! THEN — Natalie hit the stage! Girlfriend SET IT ON FIRE! Ray Charles closed the festival following her set — not only did he keep the fire burning, when she came out to join him on one number, they were having such a good time that she stayed for 3 or 4 more! Natalie and Ray SAVED the 2001 Newport Jazz Festival!
She was just amazing. This performance was at Kool Jazz (remember those festivals?) don’t ask me what year. LOL! Her performance was definitely a highlight for me.

So yes, there is power in symbolism. But to assume that marginalized voters can be reduced to one demographic factor is why the word “token” was introduced into discussions about diversity. It is demeaning to think that’s all that matters.

Good afternoon, TOD! H.A.P.P.Y.N.E.W.Y.E.A.R! Been so on the go since Christmas Eve that I only had a chance to glance at the front page once or twice. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Mine was fantastic; busy, but fantastic! God-daughter came from Texas; grandson and former D-i-L#1 were hear from RI. Only thing missing was grand-daughter and former D-i-L#2. All of my house guests left on Wednesday, I’ve been in clean-up/inventory mode since. As I ended up in the hospital after last year’s party, the gear was put away by others and NOT inventoried, hence, it made setting up for this year a little challenging… Don’t intend to ever have that problem again. Am labeling all sides of the boxes with titles and pictures.

Mr 99 is impressed with your labelling and inventory. He photographed inside the boxes when we moved. I wrote on the outside “kitchen/living/bedroom stuff” - and simply wrote “santa” on the Christmas boxes - I was not his favorite person.

I felt really sad the day my Obama Presidential calendar arrived. It was a totally different calendar than yours, but still about Obama. I realized it was my final Obama calendar after having had seven years of Obama calendars.

My friend gave me a good-riddance-Bush calendar the Christmas before the last year he was in office. At first, it made me laugh, because it had dumb Bush-isms in it. Then I realized there were 12 more freakin’ months to go, before he left town!

Correction…there was a demonstration that took place in 1964…led by the NAACP….
Being largely based in silliness and stemming from so far back in American history, many of the amateur actors, made up of average citizens, typically wore blackface. The practice was allegedly curbed in 1964 after protesters led by the NAACP pressured the city into giving up the formal inclusion of blackface in the parade, but the practice, while not officially sanctioned, still occurs year after year, even as recently as 2015. This year, one should not expect any different. The tradition of blackface goes back so far that even founding father and first president of the United States, George Washington, participated.

Officers responded to a church in the 800 block of South Kirkman Road after receiving reports of a shooting victim.
The girl, who police have not identified, had just left church when she was hit in the right arm by the bullet, police said.
She was treated at the scene by the Orlando Fire Department. No bullet was recovered at the scene, police said.
Officers have no suspect information because the round “seemed to be from the voluminous amounts of gunfire” happening at the time.
