I agree meta. It’s interesting that Pete was also Reagan’s photographer, but he was a little-known background figure in that role. With POTUS, his current role has been amplified from that of a mere photographer to a highly- visible and respected pictorial narrator of our 44th President’s tenure.

I’m encouraged to see that people in the Ohio area are thinking about how to make this injustice be felt by people in power. Their idea needs a little more work, but, it’s showing that they are thinking and that makes me happy.

I agree with GGail that enlisting NBA greats and other popular celebs in Voter Registration drives is a good idea. Just as the gun regulation TV ads are going to have an impact.
My hometown Knick star, Carmelo Anthony, is a very decent generous man. Melo participated in the NBA ad and led one of the marches in Baltimore. I think he’d be eager to help achieve a better world any way he can.

        December 29, 2015 at 2:39 pm

And Vicki, as a hometown Knick fan of Melo’s, you should gather courage and send him a message asking how he could lend his support to our worthy cause of “Putting Fear into Elected Officials through the Power of Our VOTE”.

You’ll have to find a shorter title 🙂

Thank you Vicki for thinking about my suggestions and seeing validity to them ❤

These officials don't tread cautiously until they feel that their livelyhood is being threatened. Look at Chicago Mayor, now that they are calling for his job, he's cutting his vacation short.

I'm telling you – "the Power of the Vote" is the key. And if we could begin now in each of these communities with strong VOTER Registration, then the message that "we are coming for your job in November" will be heard loud and clear

I refuse to become a cynic and as a black woman, I can't afford to become one or the world will roll all over me. I ain't the one!

I wonder if PBO’s visit to Alaska was the catalyst for his lead there?

Washington’s favorite search was Leonard Nimoy and Oregon’s was Syria.

Interestingly, MN was interested in #BLM and Virginia in BokoHaram.

Not sure why Pluto made NM’s top search, although they are home to Los Alamos, White Sands and Elon Musk’s space airport.

You take a picture of them when they were 1 or 2, side by side with a picture of when they were MURDERED…and it’s only older…

They hadn’t grown out of it.

Which is why the evilness of them trying to perpetrate that that MURDERER thought he was ‘OLDER’ than what he was..

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor is cut from the same #WhitePrivilege cloth that the St. Louis County Prosecutor was.

The cops need to be held accountable for their recklessness that caused them to “fear for their own safety,” and then put on trial for the cold-blooded murder in a neighborhood park. These cops acted the same way as the Ferguson PD did, callously denying #Tamir his humanity.

just in shock still about tamir rice grand jury. knew the “perfect storm” excuse sounded familiar, and sure enough found it from the prosecutor in the john crawford murder in the walmart:
“Piepmeier said at a press conference on Wednesday that Crawford was the victim of “a perfect storm of circumstances”
    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/25/father-ohio-man-walmart-killed-police-john-crawford

it’s a talking point some consultant probably tested for them to use. i thought where there’s video of the actual murders that justice would be done in at least some of these murders, but not even clear video or photos of the victims doing nothing and getting killed within 2 seconds (crawford was estimated just one second) are helping. the institutional racism is that entrenched. can attorney general loretta lynch do anything in these cases? unreal.

TOD indulge me for a moment. I have been mostly lurking of late not just here but on twitter and Facebook and other social media because I feel somewhat frustrated….

If I read, “Bernie or Bust” or “I’ll NEVER vote for Hillary” one more time I think I’ll scream!!!!!!

One thing for sure is that power and fear motivates Republican voters. Republicans really don’t like to govern as indicated by the previous Republican administrations but they like having the power to govern. You can’t work well at something that you detest and they make no bones about the fact that they hate the government. Once in office they fall in line and follow the leader no matter how bad that leader might be even a Donald Trump. That’s what so scary about the 2016 elections. In recent weeks I’ve read stories where candidates running on the Republican side have all basically with the exception of Kasich lined up to say that Trump would be better than any Democrat. Now tell me how any of these people can say this with a straight face?

Trump is an egotistical maniac who obviously was ignored as a child and thrives on attention and fame. You can fit Trumps knowledge about governing this Nation in the head of a pin and even that is giving him too much credit. Yet, we’re having to have discussions here and all over social media about how to motivate Democrats to get out and vote in 2016. You see Democrats have to be in LOVE with their candidates otherwise they’ll just casually vote (meaning not inspire anyone else to vote) or not vote at all (because as some Dems have said, “they have lived through Republicans before and can live through them again”. Can you imagine living under a Trump or Cruz administration?) or hold their nose and vote (because there is such disdain for Hillary, Bernie and the DNC).

Meanwhile, Trump is drawing thousands to his rallies (they don’t care what he says or who he offends because they agree with everything he does. They want their WHITE America back!). He’s gets an outrageous amount of free advertisement daily from our feckless media and that absolutely insane Ted Cruz is quietly building a ground organization with all those millions he has raised to GOTV modeled after OFA.

I don’t care what it takes to motivate Democrats to wake the hell up but if we think that because we know how crazy Trump and the other clowns are that this is all that is needed for us to win in 2016 we are deluding ourselves. PBO got an all-time record 66 million votes in 2012 and he was a phenomenal, historical candidate. Those numbers will be difficult although not impossible to match. As bad a candidate as Romney was he is far better than Trump ever could be and he did not get anywhere near the enthusiasm that Trump is getting from Republican voters. Romney was a bad, flawed candidate and he got 61 million votes in 2012. This was the most votes that any Republican candidate for President had ever gotten. Remember, Republicans fall in line with their candidates so can you imagine how many Trump would get?

So yes we must continue to protest, agitate and make lives uncomfortable just as MLK did back in the 60’s but at the same time that he was bringing the injustices into the public sphere he was petitioning the WH to get the Civil Rights Act passed. If BLM is just about the protest then other leaders have to step up and do what is necessary to get good candidates on the ballot, voters registered and to the polls on election day by whatever legitimate means necessary. It takes all of our talents to build the country we want to see.

The most important thing that any of us can do in 2016 is to not just vote but to vote as a community to ensure that Democrats have the ability to build on the policies that President Obama worked tirelessly to establish. At the very least we owe him that for his service to our country.

Every word you say is true, Donna. And I would add, don’t just vote, organize. Starting now, we can begin to register new voters and educate those who are registered. Ignorance and cynicism can’t be used as excuses not to vote. Democrats can be very powerful when we mobilize and work together. And we have to work together as we’ve never done before in 2016.

      • December 29, 2015 at 7:44 pm

    Rich, White and Refusing Vaccinations

    By NICHOLAS BAKALAR

    DECEMBER 24, 2015 4:32 PM

The people most likely to refuse to have their children vaccinated tend to be white, well-educated and affluent, researchers report.

A study published in the January issue of the American Journal of Public Health used California state government data on “personal belief exemptions,” or opting out of vaccinations for nonmedical reasons. From 2007 to 2013, the rate of vaccine refusal for personal belief doubled, to 3.06 percent.

The researchers reviewed data among all kindergarten children in the state during that time. More than 17,000 children, attending 6,911 schools, were exempted.

Exemption percentages were generally higher in regions with higher income, higher levels of education, and predominantly white populations. In private schools, 5.43 percent of children were exempt, compared with 2.88 percent in public schools.

In some suburban areas, rates of exemption were near 50 percent, and more than a quarter of California’s schools have measles immunization rates below the 92 to 94 percent required for herd immunity, the level of vaccination necessary to protect people who are not immune.

The lead author, Y. Tony Yang, an associate professor at George Mason University, said that broader vaccination coverage is critical for public health. The findings “emphasize the importance of a targeted approach, focusing on selected communities,” he said. “And we have to think about communicating with these people effectively without attacking them or making them feel defensive.”

So very happy that I’m not the only one thinking about the political ramifications of this tragedy!!! Thank you Joy Ann Reid

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/12/29/rice-prosecutor-indicted-innocent-men-but-not-killer-cops.html

The question now, for those Cleveland residents who are dismayed by the sullen, foregone conclusion of the Rice case, is what they plan to do about it.

McGinty, a Democrat, faces a March primary, in which he will face former assistant prosecutor Michael O’Malley, who resigned from the department this spring. O’Malley has the backing of at least one prominent black politician: U.S. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and a onetime Cleveland-area mayor.

McGinty, for his part, claims the support of a former NAACP leader and once-powerful City Council president, George Forbes, a pillar of Cleveland’s black community. But the aging and now-retired Forbes failed to appear as scheduled as one of McGinty’s two allotted endorsers when the County Democratic Party’s executive committee met this month to decide whether to back him for re-election. And depending on whom you ask, Forbes’ absence was either a testament to his growing physical infirmity, or a telling indication of how deep, or how public, the elder statesman intends his support to be.

The question now is whether times have changed so much since the ’90s that McGinty will now pay a political price.
In the end, the committee returned no endorsement, an unprecedented rebuke of an incumbent.

      December 29, 2015 at 5:50 pm

Okay, I’m at peace that Justice has begun to gather strength…

“When we start to connect the dots from Tamir Rice, to Chicago, to Ferguson, to Baltimore… we have seen how prosecutors have operated differently in using their discretion,” Colvin said. “A lot of us in the activist community have gotten a whole new education on the criminal justice system. But it really just comes down to the importance of voting.”

McGinty won’t be the only Democratic canary in 2016’s prosecutorial coalmine. He and Cook County, Illinois, prosecutor Anita Alvarez, who took a year to bring charges in the Chicago police-involved shooting death of Laquan McDonald, will face primary voters on the same day: March 15, 2016.

It will be a date criminal justice reform activists, and big-city Democratic prosecutors, will be watching very closely.

        GA GGail.

Ice on windshield isn’t that uncommon in SoCal — a couple of years ago (in January or February) I literally couldn’t get into my car (parked in driveway) because it had rained overnight and then froze by morning. My car was encased in ice. Had to run warm water over the door just to get it opened. Only time that’s happened in my 50+ years in SoCal.

Tonight will be the third night in a row of frost warnings in Ventura County (which produces the majority of US citrus and avocado harvests IIRC), and the cold months of January/February haven’t arrived yet.

GA arapaho, in the 30 years that I’ve lived in Southern California (Los Angeles), I have NEVER had frozen frost…until now…that I’m in the San Gabriel Valley, city of Monrovia. I had some one morning last week and it was a thin layer, but this morning caused me to delay my departure by 10 whole minutes – WHAAAT???!!!@!!##!!!!

          • 75 arapaho415
            December 29, 2015 at 7:28 pm

Weather patterns are so different here, depending on where you are.

I think it was Jan-Feb 2013 when my car was encased in ice — must not have rained overnight where you are, or temps didn’t get below freezing — was a huge surprise to me, never been unable to get in my car and run the defroster to melt the ice before (or since).

The rain is missing Ventura County this year — read/seen that it’s rained in the LA area, but only wispy sprinkles for just a few minutes here — barely even makes the ground wet.

Heard Ventura County fire battalion chief on @knx1070 radio over the weekend discussing the #SolimarBeach fire, and he said that area has gotten ONE-TENTH of an inch of rain this year — so we are praying for some rain (hold the ice) soon.
