This is what we MUST fight. We need to hold each corner responsible – the media, public figures, citizens who want to normalize this racist insanity, because authoritarianism doesn’t just explode into being. It creeps in insidiously

    • November 21, 2016 at 9:11 am

This is the most horrifying experience we could have possibly imagined.

I’ve been having this urge to back off of politics. I’m worn out, depressed, repulsed by what is happening. But every day it’s becoming horrifically clear that we cannot sit this out. This is wholesale destruction of our democracy. Racism and bigotry are becoming the norm in every neighborhood. We are not safe anywhere.

Oh let me tell you, some asshole that I work with asked me if I need a safety-pin or a safe place. I told that fucker that racist cowards don’t frighten me.

      • November 21, 2016 at 9:28 am

I have the same urge to back off and then something new angers me and I am convinced we need to fight for the soul of this country. Bad things happen when good people do nothing is my new motto.

        • November 21, 2016 at 9:32 am

I agree. I’m just still struggling with how to best use my energies without sinking into despair. Every day it gets worse. And it’s about to get a WHOLE lot more horrifying.

          • November 21, 2016 at 9:55 am

i think that this will be a fight of one to one as well as mass action..each of us in our own way has to take a stand when necessary…to not let bullying and bigotry…and racist actions go by without an action…

the Dem committee that i belong to met last week…we had over 100 new folks attend…all wanting to do something…all ready to not let this just be business as usual…i signed up to be on the Hospitality/Call to Action committee…i have been collecting actions that folks can do on their own…like meta’s suggestion re: calling their elected officials DEM and Rep…regarding Trump’s selling our gov to the highest bidder….and his appointees…to name two….

i am trying not to let it all overwhelm me…partaking in some kind of fight back…keeps the fear at bay….

One of my friends is in deep despair, practically can’t leave her house. I’m hoping she’ll come around, because she’s highly intelligent from my POV, has always been forward-looking, and needs to get back involved. We need her ideas, along with everybody else’s. But it’ll take her as long as it takes her, and I respect that. Trying to gently help her through it, although quite frankly – as we all know – it’s an individual process for each of us, and there’s not much reserve encouragement left in our own heads, including mine.

            • November 21, 2016 at 1:50 pm

I’m generally a pretty generous and very polite person. These days I catch myself getting angry at things that shouldn’t even bother me. I look at people suspiciously. I feel like there’s a growl on my face at all times.

Just a few blocks from where I live, a Latina nanny got seriously harassed by a Trump supporter and told to go back where she came from, all in front the young children she cares for. This sickens me.

I think one of the things that’s so galling among all the other horrible galling things is that Trump, who worships money like no one I’ve even seen, is flaunting his excesses in our face every day, aided by the tumultuous applause of the GOP. He’s a complete pig and they know it and they think it’s great. He will scam every single last one of us and the GOP will do everything they can to make him happy. It’s so grotesque and disturbing, I don’t even know how to talk about it.

There are no magical words to make you feel better, I realize that. But I’ll still send you my deep feelings of friendship and several virtual hugs. This is what kills me. Good people – like you, that nanny, those children you mentioned, countless others – are being injured. Sometimes you can see the injury, sometimes not. But it’s there. We’re all injured in some way, and Trump hasn’t even gone to D.C. yet. I have another long-time friend – a 70-year-old very nice, active Democrat and an active churchgoer – who has confided in me that she is waiting for him to be assassinated. And I have more stories of what others have told me, but better leave it at that. Take care of yourself, meta.

        GM meta.

Agree with everything you said — see my reply to DF downthread.

DJT is in the process of selling our country off piecemeal, to the highest bidder, just to enrich himself and prop up his ego.

Domestic horrors can be reversed by future administrations, but DJT is forging alliances with other kleptocracies that is truly frightening for everyone in non-kleptocracies and America too.

Will the powers jockeying for position for world domination in 4 years time only include China, Russia and Saudi Arabia?

Jeebus! Then this last paragraph in that NYT article above, re: them & DT:

“I think we can be the ones out in front, thinking about those things he hasn’t quite grasped yet, who are putting forward policies,” Mr. Spencer said, that “have a realistic chance of being implemented.”

      GM DF.

This is our moment, between now (in actuality from next week, since this week most will be frantic w/ all-things-Thanksgiving related) and Electoral College vote on Dec 19.

This country is truly is on the precipice of “electing” a snakeoil salesman whose only interest in the presidency is the profit he can make, and with complicit members of the legislative bodies who were created to ensure “checks and balances.”

Drives me absolutely bonkers that MSM continue to “report” on DJT as if he were just another pol becoming the leader of the free world, when he is literally ceding world order to China and Russia, and will be allies for only the most corrupt, loathsome political crooks in the world.

This is our time, America, and we have less than a month to stop the selling of our country to the highest bidder. Pence would be horrible on domestic issues, but those can be corrected in future administrations.

DJT is f*cking up all global relationships for the foreseeable future.

Catholic priests in this country already have that ability in the confessional – to show mercy for and absolve women who have had abortions, still considered a grave sin. This is meant for other countries, and the extension follows the “Year of Mercy,” which is why the Pope has chosen now to announce it. It’s a big deal.

Good morning TOD. Thank you NW for keeping us going. Yesterday was wonderful to go to my church and my Sacred Journey group and talk about what we can do to combat the Trump Administration. It was a very good and productive conversation. So good to be with people who understand how you feel and how to do what we need to do. I am going to write a letter to my brother this week. I have started it. I know I need to be more out spoken, but I also have to pick my battles. Today I will be spending the day with 2 friends who are very anti democratic and watch Fox all the time. We do not talk politics. I hope they don’t bring it up because I don’t want to argue. Thank goodness all who will be at my house for Thanksgiving all feel the same way so we won’t have to be quiet about how we feel.

Thank you all for all everyone is doing. It will take us all to stick together.

My apologies if this has been posted already. I’ve not been checking in as often lately, because I’ve actually grown angrier every day since the election and and I’ve become even more incapable of expressing my feelings about this whole nightmare. Every day, if not every hour, the news about DJT and his proposed administration gets more frightening. Anyway, this woman expresses how I feel in so many ways.

Thanks for sharing this. It is exactly what I am feeling too. Although I’m white, I am an immigrant and I already feel that I can’t sign anything to protest, as I could get deported at some point. What a way to feel in this country that I love so desperately and I can’t even imagine what other immigrants, Mexicans, Jewish people, LGBTQ people and many women feel at this point?

      November 21, 2016 at 1:47 pm

Another stellar find; thanks so much JER. I hope that those who are thinking of and planning a resistance can pass this around. Most of the recent history shows us that people with privilege will protest and resist only when it is fashionable, convenient, and without any real sacrifice on their parts. They get older and start thinking about the jobs that they want to get and hold, going back to having fun and not having to think about “those people” again. Those who proudly say that they marched with King, did nothing to advance the cause of civil rights in the decades that followed; indeed many became the kind of people that they one protested. I have no great belief that anything will be different this time. Soon after the inauguration, the great majority of the privileged will easily settle in to the new reality and their lives will go o unchanged. POC, LGBTQ, immigrants, illegal and otherwise, will be left with little power other than our faith, our families, and our stubborn will to survive. The unpleasant reality is that we need powerful white allies, individuals and organizations, who can stay the course, but they are few. I have no hope that we will be other than what we have always been: tools to be used then discarded; second rate citizens in a country that lies to itself about what it is.

      • November 21, 2016 at 2:53 pm

CEB….i am praying and organizing..hoping to quell the despair that can envelope us at a time like this…..we had our DEM committee meeting last week…100 new people attended…they were ready and willing to act….looking for direction of what to do…

i am willing to bet that there were meetings like this taking place all over the country…..i will have faith and determination that the resistance will continue

[In case you need to add more spices to your cupboard, buy from here:]

Penzeys, a Wauwatosa-based company famous for its spices, is in the middle of a political firestorm after its owner slammed President-elect Donald Trump and the voters who supported him.

“The open embrace of racism by the Republican Party in this election is now unleashing a wave of ugliness unseen in this country for decades,” Bill Penzey Jr. wrote in a Tuesday night email to the company’s mailing list. “The American people are taking notice.”

        GA/GM.

        Thanks Gazelle, for posting.

Until this year, in the Los Angeles area we had a weekend “food talk” radio show, which was great — answered a lot questions and offered great cooking tips. Unfortunately it was replaced this year with a “car talk” program w/ some guy with an annoying southern accent — have absolutely NO interest in this show, but seems like a harbinger of this year — replace a show that everyone can relate to (everyone has to eat) with one that appeals to a few, and mostly men. Ugh.

Anyway, the point of this response is to say that I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about Penzey’s, that their quality and freshness can’t be beat.

So good for them — glad to hear this.

This person’s writing is a good part bullshit. Blaming HRC’s loss on the fact that WWC felt left out, but then giving voice to her reach out via wages and infrastructure spending is contradictory. So the WWC didn’t hear her message, but the working class of persons of color heard it. No, the WWC heard……”she’s concerned about everybody…..whites, blacks, Latinos, etc. “. No, it’s the phobia of WWC of folks who don’t look like them or with whom they have no regular contact…that the rest of us will somehow surpass them in skills and achievements. All this born on the supposed historic white supremacy passed through generations. He needed to do a bit more research, or at least be honest with himself.
